1936年10月25日，根据中革军委的命令，红三十军突破马家军黄河防线，渡河西进。随后，红四方面军指挥部率红五军、红九军随之过河。由于国民党军队的阻击，红军夺取宁夏的计划被迫中止。1936年11月11日，渡河部队2.18万人奉中央命令组成西路军，西进河西走廊，试图打通由河西走廊经新疆到苏联的国际通道。西进期间，西路军广大干部、战士坚决执行中央命令，不怕牺牲，浴血奋战。但由于无根据地作依托，又无兵员、物资补充，孤军作战，虽毙伤俘敌约2.5万余人，但在敌众我寡的极端不利的情况下最终失败。只有西路军左支队400多人到达了新疆，在他们中还诞生了我军最早的特种技术兵部队。...。It's October 1914 and the war is not going well.
