故事发生在清乾隆年间。理亲王拉拢皇子趁乾隆（傅聪 饰）南巡之机谋反，他们派人找到因丧父离职的施襄夏（章贺 饰），要他刺探皇帝行踪，不料被其拒绝，但生性多疑的乾隆还是对襄夏起了疑心。襄夏逃至幼时学棋的老师家，老师斟酌再三，决定让他与范西屏（程皓枫 饰）举行旷世对弈。消息传出，轰动江南，乾隆也因此暂时放缓了抓捕襄夏的行动。比赛开始，双方博弈疾如厉风、缓似柔面，招招透露出人生与人性的煎熬与无奈。已挫败谋反的官员们想上前抓捕襄夏，伹被乾隆制止了，范西屏暗示襄夏逃走，伹此时的襄夏心中杂念全无，只剩下了行云流水的黑白世界......。The title of Miguel Gomes' début film is derived from the expression: 'Until the age of thirty, you have the face that God gave you, after that you have the face you deserve.'
